DL notches Mid-State win
The Detroit Lakes volleyball team took care of their own business against a rebuilding Staples-Motley team, winning in sweeping fashion by the scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-18 Tuesday inside Ralph Anderson Gym.
The Lakers improved to 9-11 on the season after three clean games, where the Cardinals couldn't mount much pressure on the DL defense.
DL head coach Jim Wood also was able to see what his bench players had, with all 14 gettingi time on the floor.
"It was good to see some of the players who haven't seen a lot of time play well," Wood said. "Alexis Schermer, who is a fine player in the middle for us, came up with some big blocks and was aggressive with her hitting. She gets some serious hangtime."
Schermer finished with four solo blocks and three assists, while senior leader Carrie Sorensen led the way in kills with 10, followed by Emma Wood's seven and Jen Matter's five.
Rachel Shane finished with 14 set assists in the sweep, as well.
The Lakers also welcomed the return of senior middle hitter Savannah Fritz, who had a dislocated knee.
"She's just dying to play," Wood said. "Overall, I think we are doing well at everything. The girls are playing in the right place and reading the hitters."
Wood also credited junior defensive specialist Katie Grosz for having a good game with six digs.
"Melody Peterson was also solid in the back row for us," Wood said. "She was getting her passes to the setter."
The Lakers will host Thief River Falls (12-10) Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
