After a Mid-State split in Park Rapids Friday, the Detroit Lakes softball team maintained control of their own destiny for their quest of a conference title.

The Lakers used a 10-run sixth inning to prevail in game one of a doubleheader against the Panthers in an 11-2 win, while Park Rapids rebounded in the nightcap with a 6-3 victory.

DL senior pitcher Callea Butz had control and velocity on her pitches in each game, while the Laker defense backed her up well with only one error total in both tilts.

"We played one of our best games of the season (in the 11-2 win)," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "Callea kept us in the game after we trailed 2-0 in the first five innings and the girls ran the bases aggressively."

After Park Rapids rang up runs in each of the first and second innings on RBI hits by senior catcher Leeza Tostenson and senior centerfielder Shelby Weckworth, DL struck with a backbreaking 10-run sixth.

DL's bats combined to record eight hits in the frame, including a big two-run single by centerfielder Hannah Ianiro and a one-run fielder's choice by Kathyrn Kinney.

The Panthers committed two errors in the inning, leading to five unearned runs, while senior teammates shortstop Shayna Dugger and designated hitter Amalea Branded capped the frame off with two RBI hits.

Every Laker in the batting order scored.

Jenna Lamb added DL's 11th run in the seventh after being hit by a pitch and rounding all the bases on passed balls and wild pitches.

Branden finished with a 3-4 game, with two RBIs and a run scored. Leadoff hitter second baseman Donna Wicker was 2-4, as the Lakers finished with a dozen hits.

Butz held the Panthers at bay after they bolted to a 2-0 advantage, by striking out six and walking just two.

Only one Park Rapids' batter made it past second after the second inning, including three consecutive strikeouts to strand a Panther runner on third in the fourth inning.

The Lakers were able to claim a 3-2 advantage with all three of their runs coming in the fifth inning to answer a two-run bottom of the fourth by the Panthers.

Dugger slugged out a two-run triple in the inning, but DL was held to three total hits by PR senior pitcher Breanna Warne.

The Panthers were able to manufacture four runs in the fifth off of bunts and back-to-back two-run doubles by Olivia Vaadeland and Tostenson.

"Park Rapids put the ball in play and were able to score runs," Kirchner said. "It was a well-played game by both teams."

Butz took the loss, but pitched well, by recording nine strikeouts and walking two, while the Panthers belted out 10 hits.

They were led by Vaadeland with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and Tostenson after going 2-2 with two RBIs.

The Lakers will host Thief River Falls Thursday in an important section-seeding game, starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Section 8-2A playoffs start Tuesday, May 25, with brackets to be announced by this weekend.
