DL slugs out 12 hits and runs to overpower TRF
A 12-2 victory put senior Alex Guetter back on track, after the Laker hurler struck out seven and walked just two in Thief River Falls Friday.
It's an encouraging sign for the Lakers' pitching rotation, in which Guetter is No. 2. He also limited the Prowlers to just two hits.
"Alex threw a nice game," said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. "If we are going to be successful and make a run in the section tournament, we need Alex to be a big part of it."
Guetter's only two runs allowed resulted in a one-out walk and a one-out hit batter in the third and fourth innings.
Besides those, DL played strong defense behind him and he kept the ball low and in the strike zone for seven K's.
Lefty Ben Lindquist also pitched one inning, putting the Prowlers down in the order in the bottom of the sixth, along with one strikeout.
The Lakers did give Guetter a nice cushion out of the gates by scoring three in the top of the first, including a one-out solo homer by junior shortstop Connor McLeod, who finished going 3-3 with three RBIs.
Senior Brock Johnson also drove in two runs in the first on a double, plating both first baseman T.J. Manning and third baseman Tyler Fode.
DL added two runs in the third, one more in the fourth and broke TRF's back with a four-run fifth.
They closed the home team out with two in the sixth on a two-run double by centerfielder Joe Thompson.
"The guys hit the ball well and took good swings," Fuhs said. "There were a lot of hard hits (four extra bases) which hit the gaps."
The Lakers finished with 12 hits, with Manning (2-3) and Johnson (2-3, three RBIs) joining McLeod with multiple hits.
With Mid-State Conference play on the horizon, that means doubleheaders.
"We'll be playing more kids to see what they can do and we'll also be going through more pitchers," Fuhs said. "We're still looking for our fourth and fifth pitchers."
With a 4-1 record, the Lakers have displayed some solid defense -- sans their loss in Fergus Falls.
"They've been solid defensively, with just one bad game," Fuhs said.
"We're also going to start having some more home games, which will help because we are pretty comfortable at Washington Ballpark."
