DL Softball: Hitting machine Lakers score 4th straight win

The Detroit Lakes bats were hot, even though the weather outside didn’t match, as the Lakers swept visiting Mid-State Conference foe Perham Thursday at Snappy Park.

The Lakers put together their fourth win in a row with victories of 7-4 and 15-5 in five innings over the Yellowjackets.

It was the offense which propelled the Lakers in both wins, with a combined 26 hits, but the defense stiffened again and the pitching of Chaz Butz is heightening the team as well.

“Chaz threw well in both games and we played better defense again,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “The strength is our hitting and now we have four good wins in a row.”

Junior Llecenia Burnside came up with the clutch hit in game one, with DL trailing 2-1 going into the third inning.

Her two-out, one-run single drove in the final run of three in the inning, as DL settled in and clinched the victory with a three-run sixth.

DL managed three straight singles by Burnside, Hannah Ianiro and Rachel Ianiro to start the inning.

A sacrifice bunt by Brooke Olson was followed by an RBI single from Carolyn Kinney to cap the scoring.

Butz allowed eight hits, including a two-run homerun by Dani Nelson.

But the defense didn’t allow any crucial errors in the win.

“The girls did a nice job hitting the ball and picking up some clutch hits,” Kirchner said.

DL had four batters with two hits apiece, including Kathryn Kinney, Sadie Larson, Burnside and Carolyn Kinney.

Hits more than doubled in game two, to 19, as the Lakers built a 5-0 lead after the first frame.

Three straight hits by Kathryn Kinney, Vagle and Larson keyed the inning, with RBI hits from Larson, Burnside, Hannah Ianiro and Anya Butzer.

“It was good to see a five-run cushion early, because we could get more aggressive batting and running,” Kirchner said.

That’s exactly what the Lakers did, as they posted three more runs in the second inning and three in each of the fourth and fifth frames to claim the 10-run rule victory in the fifth.

Kyra Vagle went 4-4, while Burnside remained hot at the plate by going 3-4 with four runs scored and Hannah Ianiro went 3-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs, along with two doubles.

Other multiple hitters were Kathryn Kinney, Larson, Emily Seebold and Rachel Ianiro, with two apiece.

The Lakers will travel to Pequot Lakes Tuesday for a doubleheader, starting at 4 p.m.
