The Detroit Lakes softball team marked its first two wins of the season in convincing fashion with victories of 13-3 and 11-6 in Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday.

The key to both victories was the strong defense, something which was lacking in DL’s first four games, said Laker head coach Phil Kirchner.

“The defense played well behind (pitcher) Chaz Butz,” Kirchner said. “The team is getting better and it’s nice to get back on the winning track.”

The offense was also churning out hits, as DL combined for 31 hits in the Mid-State Conference double header.

Senior first baseman Sadie Larson went 4-5 in game one, including a towering two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.

DL senior Llecenia Burnside ignited the Lakers with a two-out, two-run single in a three-run first inning.

After that, the Lakers piled up the hits and runs with three tallies in the fourth, four in fifth and three more in the seventh.

Butz had a shaky start. allowing two hits and two walks for three runs in the bottom of the first, but settled in after that to keep the Wolverines scoreless for the remainder of the game.

“Chaz kept us in the game with some solid pitching,” Kirchner said.

Game two was much of the same, with DL compiling 16 hits, including sophomore Carolyn Kinney going 4-4, sophomore catcher Emily Seebold 3-4 with three RBIs and Larson driving in three runs after going 2-4.

Senior Kathryn Kinney, freshman Kyra Vagle and sophomore Rachel Ianiro each had two hits, as well.

Butz walked just one, while striking out six.

DL goes 0-2 in Casselton

DL fell twice to a talented Casselton, N.D., team in Twin Valley Saturday, losing by the scores of 10-3 and 8-3.

The Lakers had seven errors in the 10-3 loss, which led to seven unearned runs, but improved in game two with just two miscues.

“You can’t have seven errors in a game and expect to win,” Kirchner said.

DL had six hits in each game, while Butz took the loss in the first game and Emma Maguire the defeat on the mound in the second tilt.

The Lakers (2-4) will travel to Perham Thursday for a conference double header, starting at 4 p.m.
