DL struggles vs. 3A teams

Left Fielder Joe Thompson makes a diving attempt at a Bemidji hit during their game at Washington Ballpark Monday evening

There were some valuable section seeding points left on the table by the Detroit Lakes baseball team after falling to Class 3A squads Moorhead and Bemidji Monday and Tuesday.

Both the Spuds and Lumberjacks brought talented teams into Washington Ballpark.

The Spuds downed the Lakers 12-1 Tuesday behind 15 hits, compared to DL's three.

Aaron Ostlund and Lucas Henry of Moorhead each had homeruns in the rout, while each had four RBIs.

Ben Lindquist started the game for the Lakers, while T.J. Manning, Andy Fondrick and Connor McLeod each came in for relief.

Moorhead's Brooks Miller limited the Lakers to just three hits in six innings.

Bemidji cuffs DL's bats

Junior Bemidji pitcher Tyler Follis had the Lakers' number Monday at Washington Ballpark, after pitching a four-hit near shutout -- along with a solo homerun and double -- in an 8-1 victory.

Bemidji put together only four hits in the game, but they were bolstered by five DL walks and two errors, while only stranding four on base.

The Lakers matched the Lumberjacks' four hits, but stranded eight and drew only two walks.

"We didn't make the plays we needed to and gave away too many free bases," Fuhs said.

Bemidji had only two runs in the decisive five-run fourth inning, but also used two walks and a hit batter for base runners.

Follis started the rally with a leadoff double off of starting pitcher Jordan Manning, which was followed by a one-out walk and an RBI single by Mason Ballew.

A hit batter with bases loaded brought in another run and was followed by a sacrifice fly for an RBI by Mitch Hendricks.

An error brought in the other two runs as Bemidji led 6-0 after four, then added two more runs -- one a solo blast by Follis -- in the fifth.

"Jordan (Manning) was throwing strikes and he kept us in the game," Fuhs said. "We just haven't been consistent with our hitting."

The Lakers had a rally from their bench players, as DL had three hits and a walk in the bottom of the seventh, which produced one run.

Ben Lindquist railed a double and scored on Chris Nelson's single to left field.

Jon Gilson laced a double and was followed by a walk by Nate Krohne to load the bases, but Follis ended the inning with two straight outs.

Manning took the loss after tossing four innings and giving up all eight runs -- five earned.

The Lakers remain busy by hosting Thief River Falls Thursday and Frazee Friday to close out the regular season.
