DL swimmers back in action
The Detroit Lakes boys’ swimming and diving team outmatched the Morris Area Tigers, as Laker head coach Rian Heimark designated his team’s last four events as exhibition Tuesday.
The final score ended up being 93-51, with DL’s Jared Olson winning the 200 and 500-yard freestyles, Caleb Howard taking the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Zane Freeman winning diving and the 100 breaststroke, Spencer Heimark winning the 100 fly, and Austin McCullough winning the 100 freestyle.
“We split our relays so that the guys could race each other, and we took first and second in all three relays,” Heimark said. “We haven’t had a practice since last Thursday, and many of the boys were gone during the holiday break, so the team is out of shape right now.
“We went into the Morris meet with the understanding that we were going to need to push each other if we were going to improve our times.”
Heimark arranged the entries so each swimmer would have someone to push him, whether it be a Morris swimmer or a Laker competitor.
“The boys swam very good races and they pushed each other through all 12 events,” Heimark said.
Nine Lakers have qualified for the Section 5-1A meet so far, in only three meets.
“We have several other boys that are very close to qualification times, so we are looking forward to some good competition in the next couple of weeks,” Heimark said.
