The Lakers notched spots in the consolation finals in all four of their events, including Krengel’s 50 and 100-yard freestyle races, the 200-freestyle relay and the 400-freestye relay.

“It was a great experience and our goal Friday was to go four-for-four,” said DL head coach Rian Heimark. “We got it and were very happy doing so.”  Krengel just missed setting the DLHS record in the 50-freestyle by .03 of a second after he raced for a 22.16 for 11th place. But he didn’t let get him down by setting the 100-freestyle school record with his 48.21, which netted him 10th.

“Those are two hard events to swim in because you can’t make any mistakes in them because they are so fast,” Heimark said. “Before last year, no one had heard of Carter and after these last two seasons, people started taking notice of him.”  Krengel also anchored both state relay teams, with each finishing 16th place.

The 200-freestyle relay of junior Isaac Clem, senior Mike Okeson, junior Austin McCullough and Krengel raced for a time of 1:37.37.  “They were able to lower their school-record mark in the preliminaries, so they were happy,” Heimark said.

The 400-freestyle relay team of Clem, Okeson, Jared Olson and Krengel finished with a time of 3:23.57.  “Everyone had good splits in both relays,” Heimark included.

St. Thomas Academy won the team championship with 263 points, while Monticello was second with 190.5.

Lakers go four-for-four

The season was extended by one day for all the Detroit Lakes state qualifiers, as each advanced to the finals Saturday inside the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Krengel made the finals in all four of his events, including his individual races of the 50 and 100-yard freestyles.  Each the 200 and 400-freestyle relay squads also will be competing in Saturday’s finals, which start at noon.  “That was the goal, to go four-for-four,” Heimark said. “We would have liked to have gotten Carter in the Championship finals at least in one of his events, but we’ll take making Saturday anyways.”

Krengel scored personal-best times in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, while being just .2 of a second off the DLHS record in the 50.  He raced for a 22.15 Friday in the 50 freestyle preliminary for 10th place, while taking 12th in the 100 freestyle with a 48.44.

A swimmer needs to finish in the top eight to race in the Championship finals in each event. The bottom eight race for the consolation prize.  “After doing well in my first event (the 50 freestyle), I knew I had a chance to do well in all my events,” Krengel said. “It gave me a first shadowing that I had a good taper over the week.”

Krengel is also the anchor for each the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, as each also qualified for finals action Saturday.  The 200-freestyle team of Clem, Okeson, McCullough and Krengel combined for a 1:32.08 for 15th place.

“We had personal best times in both relay events,” Heimark said. “Austin had his fastest sprint split time of the season, while Isaac and Jared (Olson on the 400) were close to their best times.”  The 400 freestyle relay team of Clem, Okeson, Olson and Krengel notched a time of 3:23.32 for 10th place.
