DL swimmers posture in P.R.

Email

The barometer was set for the Detroit Lakes girls' swimming and diving team after the Park Rapids Invite last Saturday, and it's still set pretty high.

The Lakers finished fifth out of seventh teams, but more importantly, were able to match or better times compared to the same meet, which was held last year about the same time.

"The Park Rapids meet was a good indicator as to where we are at and what we need to work on," said DL head coach Carol McCarthy. "There are a lot of high expectations for the season with the seniors, to break records and get personal bests. It's always a great sense of accomplishment to end one chapter of your swimming career with your best times, and that is the goal of each senior."

Senior Melissa Paakh remains as strong as ever in the 200-yard individual medley, taking first with a time of 2:18.36, while teammate Libby Larson took second in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 2:08.77 and third in the 500 freestyle at 5:45.68.

The leadership and work ethic the seniors are passing on to their younger teammates is also paying off, McCarthy said.

"Sophomores Katie Larson, Miranda Olson and Ayla Erickson are seeing time drops and coming into their own in their events," the DL coach commented. "Freshman Maddy Schiller is also looking strong across the board in whatever she swims this year. Katie Arens has been dropping time like crazy."

The eighth graders are also working on "honing" their skills and speed.

Those eighth graders include Jennifer Bellware, Grace Livermore, Jocelyn Skoda, Breanna Buck and diver Kyley Foster.

The Lakers competed in Fergus Falls Tuesday, which was used for swimmers to take on different events.

"We do this a couple times a year, because there are a number of swimmers who have a goal of swimming each event, each season," McCarthy added.

Paakh won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:07.02, while Morgan Nodsle took third in the 100 freestyle at 59.67 and Ashtin Spies was a bronze winner in the 100 breaststroke at 1:21.35.

The Lakers will host Perham Tuesday inside the BTD Aquatics Center, starting at 6 p.m.
