Coming off an all-time Minnesota state record of 284 in the South Sub-Section meet last week, the Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team dialed it down a bit, but still easily claimed their fifth-straight Section 8-2A championship Tuesday at Longbow Golf Course in Walker.

All six Lakers claimed the top spots in the Section 8-2A meet, while yet another step was taken to solidify the team’s place in golf history, as they will now officially be vying for their third-straight Class 2A state championship, which is June 10-11 in Jordan.

The Lakers also doubled down on medalist honors, as seniors Trisa Hutchinson and Natalie Roth tied for the lowest score, each finishing with a two-over par 74.

The next four spots in the tourney also belonged to DL, as Emma Thompson stroked a 77, Kate Smith shot a 79, and Matty Tschider and Sydney Busker each followed with an 81.

“Our goal heading into the section was to improve on last year’s score, which was a 310, so we did that,” said DL head coach Cali Harrier.

“It’s been an emotional last few meets, because we know it’s coming to an end.”

With four seniors graduating off what can be considered one of the best girls’ golf teams in the state’s history, the end is near with only two days of team golf remaining.

But those are the final two steps to put the icing on the Lakers’ third-consecutive state title, which would send off the seniors of Hutchinson, Roth, Thompson and Tschider out on top.

“We are all focusing on the positives, but those four seniors are leaving quite the legacy for our program,” Harrier included.

Heading into state, each Laker will have the goal of reaching the podium and earning all-state honors, with Roth and Smith also returning to defend their state co-medalist laurels.

But Hutchinson will be a contender, along with Thompson, Tschider and Busker, as each have shot low this season.

The Lakers also will have to be focused on the first day of the state meet and try to establish a good lead, with Pequot Lakes and Red Wing each being real threats to DL’s quest for a championship.

Pequot Lakes won its section by shooting a 299-304 – 603, which is a great team score.

“The girls really want to come out firing on the first day and build a nice lead, but they are well aware of those teams heading into state,” Harrier said.

The Lakers had to endure an extended Section 8-2A meet, as well, after Monday’s meet was cut short by heavy rain, thus pushing the competition into Tuesday.

“It was good to see the girls pick up where they left off after the delay,” Harrier said.

The Lakers will be teeing off Tuesday at Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan, starting at 7:30 a.m.
