The Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team went up against some of their toughest competition of the season during the Sub-Section 8-2A meet Wednesday at Wildflower Golf Course – themselves.

The Lakers easily won the Sub-Section meet with a 305, while placing the top five individuals in the meet, led by junior Trisa Hutchinson’s two-over par 74.

But the goal wasn’t necessarily to win the meet, which was a probability, but to shoot under 299, which is their low score of the season and a DLHS record.

“They were shooting for that 299, but fell short it,” said DL head coach Cali Harrier. “But the conditions played a part, with the front nine being nice, but the back nine raining pretty good.”

For the fifth time this season, the Lakers had four players under 80, with freshman Kate Smith carding a second-place 75 behind Hutchinson, Natalie Roth in third at 77, Matty Tschider with a 79 and Emma Thompson finishing with an 81.

“All five of the girls felt good about the day,” Harrier said.

The other two Section qualifiers were Wadena-Deer Creek, which finished second with a 361, and Perham, who finished third at 367.

For the season, the Lakers have averaged a state-best 312, while second is Minnewaska with a 320.

But the next step cannot be skipped, as the Lakers will look to defend their Section 8-2A title Monday at Longbow Golf Course in Walker, starting at 10 a.m.

“It will be business as usual and the girls will just go out and play their games,” Harrier said. “We will take it one meet at a time.”

But look for the Lakers to be shooting for that 299, or better yet, 296, which is the all-time state record held by Minnewaska.

The Lakers already hold the Class 2A state meet record of 619, which was set last year.

“Shooting a 296 or better is in the back of our minds, but the girls just need to keep consistent through the rest of the season,” Harrier added.
