DL tankers off to good start

The Detroit Lakes girls' swimming and diving team finally jumped back into the competitive waters, winning nine of 12 events to take the Crookston Invitational Thursday.

The leaders on the team were Libby Larson, who won the 200 (2:22.40) and 400 (4:59.24) freestyle races, and Melissa Paakh, who was a victor in the 200 individual medley (2:33.47) and 100 butterfly (1:08.85).

"The meet turned out to fire them up for what lies ahead this season," said DL head coach Carol McCarthy. "The new swimmers had a chance to test out their strokes and turns, while the more experienced swimmers turned out some exciting finishes and times -- and I believe a number of them are on track for breaking a few records this year."

Andi Weiss won the 50 freestyle with a time of 30.20, while Shayna Dugger looked good in her first diving event after taking third in the state a year ago with a score of 196.5.

Ashtin Spies was the fastest in the 100 freestyle at 1:06.06.

"Miranda Olson, an eighth grader, showed true sportsmanship when she placed third in diving and received a medal -- her first one -- but had to hand it back because the meet officials only allow two people from each team to score for each event," McCarthy said. "She also was a member of the 200 free relay who were mistakenly given first-place medals and had to exhange them for second place.

"The moral of the story is that she did end up with a higher place medal than the one she gave back and through it all, she was a good sport about it."

The 200-medley relay foursome of Spies, Raaf, Paakh and Andi Weiss won the event with a time of 2:14.58.

The Lakers will be back in action Tuesday at Staples-Motley for a 6 p.m. start.
