DL tennis team competitive in loss
The 6-1 final score wasn't any indication of how the Detroit Lakes boys' tennis team played in Bemidji Tuesday.
The Lakers picked up their lone win at No. 1 doubles as seniors Alex Nustad and Ben Van Offelen won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 over Aaron Johnson and Matt Lee.
"They played very solid and are 3-2 (record) early in the season, which is great," said DL head coach Jim Hinson. "As a team, even though the score is lopsided, we were competitive."
Ryan Borgeson lost a three-set heartbreaker at No. 1 singles to senior Ben Holter, falling in the third set 6-4.
"Ryan struggled to find his timing in the first set, which he lost 6-0, but he made some great adjustments, settled down and won the second set 7-5," Hinson said.
Bergeson was up a service break in the third set and was serving at 4-3.
"I think he tightened up a bit, missed a couple of crucial shots and ultimately lost 6-4," Hinson added. "I was happy with Ryan's 'gut check' after the first set."
Sophomore Jake Hartman fell down two service breaks in the first set of his second singles match, but fought back to 6-6, only to lose the tiebreaker.
"I am very pleased with Jake's attitude and work ethic," Hinson said. "He's only a sophomore, but is one of our team leaders."
Sophomore C.J. Hanson and freshman Jesse Meyer lost a three-set match to Levi Rickert and Justin Byers.
The Lakers are 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the Mid-State Conference.
