DL wrestlers vying for individual state berths
The Detroit Lakes wrestling team will have a host of grapplers contending for berths in the Class 2A state meet, set for March 2-4.
Headed by senior Brent Eidenschink, who has a top seed in the 189-pound class, DL has a total of seven top five seeds heading into the Section 7-2A individual tournament Friday and Saturday in Minnewaska.
DL's other top seed went to sophomore heavyweight Jon Tolbert, who carried a 28-8 record into the sections.
Eidenschink, who will be wrestling for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers next year, and was ranked No. 2 in the state at 215 for much of the year, returned from a fractured ankle after about a month layoff.
He has not lost since coming back and has a perfect 30-0 record heading into sections. DL head coach Rob Ullyott said Eidenschink has seen plenty of action at 189 and it is his most comfortable weight. He is currently rated No. 1 in the state in that division.
The Laker senior claimed the 189 state's runner-up his sophomore year and a third-place finish in last year's state tournament.
Senior Justin Horne is DL's lone second seed, after he went 31-5 on the season. He opens against sophomore Andrew Becker of Staples-Motley who is 16-18.
Horne is looking for a return trip to state after qualifying as a junior.
Another Laker looking for a repeat state berth is sophomore James Rogers, who is a three seed at 119. He is 4-3 on the season after missing the majority of the front half of the schedule.
Rogers will wrestle Otter Tail Central's Jacob Meder in the opening round. The eighth-grader has a mark of 13-14.
The fourth DL grappler hoping to get a second trip to state is junior Mike Griffin, who enters the section as a three seed with a 24-8 mark. Griffin's first opponent is sophomore Marcus Hernandez of Pine River-Backus/Pequot Lakes.
The final seeded Laker is 152-pound junior Alex Bosch, who has a No. 5 tag with a record of 19-9. He will open section action against junior Jeremy Merrill of OTC.
Other Lakers who will be competing in the Section 7-2A tournament include: freshman Adam Holzgrove (7-13) at 103; freshman Jake Stalberger (23-9) at 112; eighth-grader Nate Duschene (3-14) at 130; sophomore Josh Tweeton (3-19) at 135; eighth grader Alex Feldt (10-15) at 140; sophomore Derrick Yoder (4-16) at 145; sophomore Jared Swiers (9-13) at 171 and sophomore Ryan Jenson (5-11) at 215.
"If we can send five or more to state, it will be a good day," Ullyott said of the upcoming section meet. "But if we can only send three or less, we didn't wrestle very well."
The opening section round starts at Friday at noon. The wrestlebacks, semifinals and finals will be Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
