The idea of getting in shape for the New Year may be sitting on the backburner for many these days — right behind that figgy pudding and chocolate fondue pot.

But when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, it's go-time.

A brand new event at the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center may have just the thing to kick that off.

For the first time, it will be holding an indoor triathlon.

The event, which takes place Saturday, Jan. 11, is designed with every fitness level in mind.

"It's a 10-minute swim, 30-minutes on the bikes and 20-minute run," explained event coordinator Heidi Mason, who says the first "wave" of six competitors starts at 8 a.m.

From start to finish, each individual triathlon should take approximately 75 minutes.

"This triathlon is for those that maybe have never done it and want to try something new or looking for a different way to train," said Mason. "So it can either be competitive or just a way for somebody who has always wanted to try a triathlon to see what it's about."

The event is set up so that competitors will be scored on the number of lengths they do in the pool and the number of miles they do on the bike and miles they do on the treadmill during the allotted time.

Although there will be a prize for the first place male and female winners, Mason says participants can go as fast or as slow as they need to during the event, as it's much more about getting people out there and trying it than it is about beating other competitors.

"If you need to, you can stop and rest or you can walk — nobody has to worry about what fitness level they are at. If you can move, you can do this," said Mason, who says the fact that the DLCCC facility is big and open with a top-notch aquatic center means local residents have the perfect set-up for the fun, new event.

"We have such an awesome pool and great facility for something like this," said Mason, "and we just hope that we get a wonderful turnout and that people really enjoy this."

Mason says she also hopes that this event sparks some enthusiasm for staying active even when the cold Minnesota weather is clamping down.

"It's right in the lull of winter, and we can't always go outside," said Mason, "but I hope this shows that we don't have to let that stop us."

The cost to sign up is $25 for DLCCC members and $30 for non-members.

If participants register before Dec. 20, they are guaranteed a free t-shirt.

Call the DLCCC to register at 844-4221 or email Heidi Mason heidi@dlccc.org and she can email a registration form.
