DL’s Foltz contributes in Concordia wrestling win
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

One Concordia senior shifted momentum, while another senior closed the deal Tuesday night at Memorial Auditorium.

Those two performances, from Kyle LeDuc and Cody Kasprick, seemed fitting on senior night for the Cobbers. Those two veterans helped spark No. 6-ranked Concordia to a 23-12 dual victory against No. 21-ranked St. John’s in college wrestling.

Kasprick capped the dual with a first-period pin at 285 pounds, helping the Cobbers end their dual season with a 15-4 record. Those 15 dual wins are a school record.

“We still have the important part of the season left,” Kasprick said.

Detroit Lakes’ native Gabe Foltz kicked the match off with a 14-4 major decision over St. John’s Rod.

“It’s nice having a guy like Cody at the end of our lineup,” LeDuc said. “He’s almost a secure six points for lots of matches. It’s nice.”

LeDuc had a momentum-changing moment at 157. St. John’s took a 9-4 dual lead after Joe Hessing upset Concordia senior Jake Long at 149 pounds. Hessing earned a 14-13 decision against Long, who is ranked No. 7 in the latest Division III rankings.

“After those matches went the way they did, I knew my match was going to be important to win,” LeDuc said. “That kind of help motivate me a little bit.”

LeDuc earned a 4-0 decision against No. 10-ranked Ryan Arne.

“That was huge,” Concordia coach Matt Nagel said. “We really had to get momentum back in our hands. … For us to come in as an underdog at that weight and get the win, it just sparked everybody.”

The Cobbers won four of the next five matches after LeDuc’s upset victory. LeDuc and Kasprick are two of five seniors on the Concordia roster.

The region individual tournament is scheduled for March 1.
