DL's Smith stays consistent for DL

The Detroit Lakes boys' golf team just got a little bit stronger.

After playing a very formidable schedule competitively, the Lakers received a boost Monday in Bemidji with the return of junior Tanner Lane, who recovered from a shoulder injury suffered in the prep hockey playoffs.

Though Lane was DL's sixth man after shooting an 82, his potential and eventual improvement will help solidify an already potent lineup.

"It's nice to get Tanner back out there," said DL head coach Bob Gorden. "He putted well, but he went out trying to score well, so I just told him to worry about swinging well."

The Lakers finished second with a 316, second to state-ranked Moorhead's 310.

Karter Smith again led the Lakers with a three-over par 75 -- even after back-to-back double bogeys --  which was good for third overall.

"He wasn't long off the tee, but Karter was up and down and he has been sinking his putts. Karter has had a very good spring and has consistent been in the 70's," said Gorden.

"He's been chipping and one-putting when he's not been on the green in regulation."

Nate Ginnaty shot a 79 to follow Smith.

Connor Hedstrom and Tyler Baukol each finished with an 81, while Rick Hutchinson and Austin Rusness did one better with an 80.

Ross Mickelson rounded out DL's scorecard with an 82.

The Lakers finished fifth in the two-day Fargo North Invitational at Rose Creek Golf Course with a 482 overall score.

Friday's opening round was cut down to nine holes, where Michael Herzog shot a 34 -- the low score in the entire field -- and eventually finished as DL's lowman with a 113, which put him in fourth overall in the tournament.

Smith shot a 120, while Andy Schupp fired a 124 and Tyler Baukol notched a 125 to round out DL's counted scores.

Other scores included Austin Rusness' 126, Rick Hutchinson's 130, Ginnaty's 131 and Ross Mickelson's 132.

The competition hasn't just been in DL's meets, but in-team, as well.

With only six golfers allowed to compete in the Mid-State Conference and Section meets, there are as many as eight to nine vying to fill those spots.

"We have five who have been able to work to the top and create some separation, but we have a lot of golfers in the mix for that final spot," Gorden said.

The Lakers will have several big meets to use to help prepare them for the upcoming Sub-Section meet, which is May 27 at Wildflower.

They will host the DL Northwest Classic at the Detroit Country Club Friday and Saturday, with some top-ranked teams competing in No. 2 Wayzata and No. 4 Moorhead.

That will lead into the Mid-State Conference Meet, which is at the DCC Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.

The Lakers have won the last 16 Mid-State titles, with Staples-Motley being one of the threats this year to end that amazing streak.

DL will host its annual invite May 25 at the DCC, then will play at the Longbow Golf Course in Walker -- the site of the Section 8-2A meet -- May 21, before entering Sub-Section play.
