Donald A. Briese, 83, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Ecumen-Emmanuel Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 25 at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with Reverend Dan C. Abrahams officiating. Interment is in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Donald Arthur Briese was born to Arthur H. and Bernice (Keven) Briese on the Aug. 28, 1930 in Wells, Minn. He attended school in Fairmont, Minn., and served with the Fifth Army Quarter Master Corps at Ft. Sheridan, Ill. He completed his military service as a mess sergeant with K-Company, 135th Infantry, 47th Division at Camp Rucker, Ala.
Donald was united in marriage to Ruth Marilyn Baird April 10, 1954 at the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Stillwater. They lived in Fairmont, where he was a baker until 1955 when they moved to Cloquet, where he was employed as a forest ranger.
In 1956 they moved to McGrath and, in 1960 to a home on Mille Lacs Lake near Isle, Minn. In 1961 they moved to Floodwood, Minn., where they made their home until transferring to Grand Marais in 1975.
Following two heart attacks in 1979, Don transferred to the Forest Service Cartographer Section in Grand Rapids. He retired in 1986 and, in 1988, they moved to a home on Lake Buchanan near Ottertail. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1995. Ruth died in 2006.
Don enjoyed genealogy, traveling and history, especially the histories of Germany and Poland.
Survivors include three children, Marilyn (Tom) Erickson of Hermosa, S.D., Duane (Sandy) Briese of Galesville, Wis., and Joan (Ron) Gervais of Grand Marais; two grandchildren, Donald (Chelsea) and Carissa; three sisters, Myrna Thompson of Shakopee, Carole Nelson of Eden Prairie and Donna Weston in Florida.
