Donald Gandrud

April 6, 1917-Aug. 18, 2008

Donald E. Gandrud, 91, of Audubon, died Monday, August 18, 2008 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Minneapolis.

Donald was born to Edwin and Della (Erickson) Gandrud on April 6, 1917 in Detroit Lakes. He was raised in the Richwood area, and educated at Pelican Valley Elementary School in rural Richwood. He later attended the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, Minn.

After Donald finished his schooling, he married Marian Jensen on Jan. 11, 1941 in Richwood Village. They farmed in the Audubon area. Donald started farming the land with horses, and eventually used the modern machinery of that time. He also raised hogs and cattle during his years of farming. He won a conservation award for his farm management. Donald planted an abundance of trees and flowers on the family farm.

After the death of his wife, Marian in 1990, Donald retired from farming and started to travel to various places. At the age of 73, Donald skied in the French Alps. He also traveled to Cape Cod, Hawaii, Norway, Alaska and England. Donald enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, golf and just being outdoors.

Surviving Donald are two sons, Ronald Gandrud of Callaway and Richard (Kathleen) Gandrud of Audubon; two daughters, Crystal Gandrud of Boston, Mass., and Cheryl (John) Kenny of Guildford Surrey in the United Kingdom; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Welty of Seattle, Wash., and Ione Roering of Moorhead; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one grandson, Sean Kenny.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Richwood Lutheran Church, rural Detroit Lakes, with interment following at Richwood Lutheran Cemetery, Richwood.
