Donald Gravelle

Donald J. "Don" Gravelle, 63, lifelong resident of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley on Saturday, May 14, 2011 in Detroit Lakes, surrounded by his family.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18 at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday, May 19 at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with Reverend Dan C. Abrahams officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.

Don was born to John and Eleanor (Olson) Gravelle on July 19, 1947 in Detroit Lakes. He was the eldest of three children.

Don grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes, graduating with the class of 1966. Following high school, he was drafted into the United States Army in 1967. He served in the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1968. He then went on to serve in the United States National Guard, specializing in survival training.

In 1978, Don was granted the opportunity to work as the construction supervisor for Ramco Oil Company. This job took him to Saudi Arabia, where he lived and worked until 1985. Don then returned to Detroit Lakes, where he was united in marriage to Vicki A. Newman on November 25, 1985.

The couple made their home in Detroit Lakes and Don continued to run his business, Gravelle Construction. He remained in business until his health made him unable.

Don was a true Minnesota man and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing the area lakes, sailing, deer hunting in the fall, and cross county skiing and snowmobiling during the winter months. Along with his outdoor hobbies, Don also enjoyed dancing with the Red River Valley Singles, where he also made many wonderful friends.

Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes.

Surviving Don are his son, Lance (Lisa) Gravelle of Stacy, Minn.; daughter, Sheri (David) Hamiga of Fargo; two stepsons, Jon (Michelle) Engum and Wade (Nancy) Engum, both of Detroit Lakes; 10 grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Kerry (Toni) Gravelle of Salem, Ore.; and many close cousins.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Vicki; and his youngest brother, Craig.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley. The David-Donehower Funeral Home is serving the family.
