Donald E. Holm, 74, of rural Detroit Lakes, died Friday, March 20, 2009 in his home.
Don was born the son of Ernest and Martha (Snow) Holm on June 26, 1934, in Minneapolis. He was raised and attended school in the Minneapolis area. Later the family moved to Annandale, Minn., where Don graduated from high school in 1952.
On Dec. 31, 1954, Don married Artis Helgeson in St. Cloud, Minn. He drove truck and helped manage Helgeson Rest Home in Sauk Rapids with his wife, Artis. In 1968, they moved to rural Detroit Lakes, and purchased Thacker's Resort on Island Lake. Don owned and operated Holm's Hideaway Resort for 28 years. He also drove school bus and later worked as a custodian at Rossman Elementary School in Detroit Lakes for a number of years.
Don served as a supervisor on the Shell Lake Township Board for many years, was an active member of the Island Lake Association, and also helped implement the building of the snowmobile trails through that area.
Don enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting and fishing for walleyes, especially in the fall. He also enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving Don are his daughter, Vicky (Russ) Vogt of Detroit Lakes; two sons, Dell (Pam) Holm of Detroit Lakes and Dean (Christine) Holm of Roseau, Minn.; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Don in death were his parents; wife, Artis (2007); and sister, Doris Saukkola.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25 at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, March 26 at Shell Lake Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Osage.
