Winnipeg native Donald B. McRae, 84, of Sacramento, Calif., died Monday, January 26, 2009 at Sutter General Cancer Center in Sacramento.
Donald Bhan McRae was born on Jan. 24, 1925 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He began his work at the Hudson Bay Mining Co. in Flin Flon, Manitoba, and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He married Jean Fyfe in 1948. She died in 1975. Together, they had three sons: Don, John (who died in 2001) and Mark.
Don moved to the U.S. in 1953 and began a career in the sugar industries, beginning in Sterling, Colo.,, with Great Western Sugar. In 1955, he joined American Crystal Sugar, working in East Grand Forks, Moorhead and Hillsboro, N.D., transferring to Clarksburg, Calif., in 1980.
Don married Beverlee Wilson in 1976. He was a past Big Sir of Branch No. 3, member of the Masonic Lodge, and enjoyed his bridge games. He will be remembered and loved as a hard-working, tough but tender-hearted Scotsman.
Surviving Don are his wife Beverlee; sons Don (Lil) McRae of Frazee and Mark (Tammy) McRae of Moorhead; daughter-in-law Diane of Detroit Lakes; stepsons Robin (Paulie) of Fairbanks, Alaska, Glen (Tessa) of Wurzburg, Germany and David (Kathleen) of Fairplay, Colo.; 17 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
