The Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce is holding the 12th Annual Festival of Birds Thursday through Sunday.

The headquarters for the bird festival is at the Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes.

It kicks off on Thursday with a "Beginning Birding in the Field," "Shorebirds Revealed" and "GPS in the Field" workshops at Maplelag Resort from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. There is also an evening program called "Critical Breeding Bird Monitoring in Minnesota" from 5:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A dinner and program follow the workshops.

Field trips to various birding sites start on Friday morning. Bus coaches with restrooms will transport attendees to the various sites.

There will be additional fieldtrips on Saturday and Sunday.

The highlight of the workshops is on Saturday with two workshops and a keynote presentation at M State.

"Document Your Sightings" is from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and "Monarch Butterfly Migrations" takes place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Noted English birding author Richard Crossley will give the keynote address Saturday night at dinner, which is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
