Jan. 18, 1916-July 26, 2011
Former Detroit lakes resident Dorothy Lucille (Cadwell) Shaffer, 95, of Bismarck, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the Baptist Home in Bismarck.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, in the Baptist Home, with Rev. Clyde Zimblemann officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Dorothy was born on January 18, 1916 in Bruce, S.D., where she grew up and graduated from high school. She married Emery Shaffer in Detroit Lakes in 1942, during World War II. They purchased a home on Little Floyd Lake near Detroit Lakes in 1948.
After Emery's death, Dorothy moved to Lincoln Park in Detroit Lakes. She moved to Bismarck in 2008 to be closer to family.
Dorothy and Emery were long time members of the First Congregational Church in Detroit Lakes, where she taught Sunday school and participated in Ladies Aid. She loved to cook, garden, cross-stitch, read, write letters to family and listen to gospel music. She was a member of the local homemakers club and was very fond of impromptu coffee parties with neighbors.
Dorothy was always quick to comment about how hard someone worked, although her own work habits took a back seat to no one. Her kindness, compassion and concern for others will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving Dorothy are her daughter, Emily (Art) Bauer of Basalt, Colo.; sons Terry (Jill) of Jamestown and Dick (Judy) of Bismarck; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, William and Myrtle (Pratt) Cadwell; her husband Emery; three brothers and five sisters; and grandchild, Joshua Shaffer.
