Dozen Lakers get feet wet in season opener at Fergus Falls

A dozen Detroit Lakes boys' swimming and diving team members got their feet wet -- literally -- for the first time in a high school competitive meet Saturday in Fergus Falls.

For that much inexperience in the season opener, the Lakers didn't fare that bad with a third-place finish out of seven teams.

"We had a lot of our first-timers pick up points for us and that's very nice to see," said DL head coach Rian Heimark.

"We are going to keep switching things up for awhile in the lineup, just so I can start seeing who I can put in what event."

Not that the Lakers are all new, with a host of seasoned vets also opening their seasons.

Junior diver Jon Melgaard had a strong opener on the diving board, taking first place.

In fact, DL picked up 42 points from the diving team, as Justin George finished third, Pat Rethwisch fifth and Aaron Colby sixth.

"That's some key points for the team from those four divers," Heimark added.

Quillan Oak garnered a pair of silver place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke, while Brandon Olson was third in both the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Oak, Olson, Cody Okeson and Travis King finished in second, as well.

"The guys were definitely out of shape, but they also saw the other teams were as well," Heimark said.

"That is expected after only 10 days of practice."

With that much new blood on the DL team, Heimark said he will be mixing and matching the lineup in each meet.

"We just need to find out the best way to score the team points," the DL coach included.

The Lakers will next host Thief River Falls Friday inside the BTD Aquatics Center, starting at 5:30 p.m.
