Duane was born the son of Emery and Marion (Jacobson) Gullard on February 9, 1941 in Moorhead. He graduated from Lake Park High School in 1959. Soon after high school, he joined the United States Army and was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, where he mastered the art of flying various models of planes.

Duane worked in farming and construction most of his life. In the early 1960s he painted bridges in Alaska and later, he returned to Minnesota, where he farmed and built homes.

Duane married Linda Beaupre on March 6, 1976. In the early 1980s, he and his family moved to Brewster, Mass., where he owned a large construction business, and was a partner and developer of Brewster Green, a time-share resort.

When he retired, Duane and his wife Linda moved to Vermont, where he farmed and became well known as a breeder of quality Labrador retrievers.

Duane will always be remembered for his love of and devotion to his family. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing in Alaska and Minnesota in his earlier years. He loved to play cards and especially enjoyed traveling with friends and family.

Duane was always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors.

Surviving Duane are his wife Linda Gullard of West Charleston, Vt.; his children, Donna (Jeff) Hershey of Athol, Idaho, Duane Gullard of Puyallup, Wash., Cindy (Dale) Messier of Spirit Lake, Idaho and Brandon (Jamie) Wirth of Mahnomen.
