For the last two seasons, the Lakes Area Screaming Eagles went limping along into the playoffs, resulting in a first-round loss each time.

But this year, Lakes Area is a machine on a roll.

Lakes Area will be hosting the Minnesota Sting Saturday in the Northern Power League playoffs, starting at 5 p.m. on the Frazee High School football field, and the team will be doing so riding a six-game winning streak.

The regular season schedule ended with a dominating 42-0 victory over Central Minnesota last Saturday on the St. John's University field.

The Eagles more than controlled both sides of the ball, as quarterback Jason McCloskey hooked up with receiver James Singer four times for touchdowns, while the defense stuffed the Rhinos for negative four yards rushing and totaled an amazing 14 sacks on the Central Minnesota quarterback.

"After a three-week layoff, I was worried we lost our timing, but we were able to run the ball early with Kyler Wegner and James (Singer) just got loose all game," McCloskey said. "Just from start to finish, we dominated every aspect of the game."

Wegner rushed the ball 16 times for 115 yards, while Singer nabbed six passes -- four for TD's -- for 154 yards.

McCloskey found Singer for end zone strikes of 11, 46, 27 and 35 yards to ravage the Rhino secondary.

Bert Smith and James Olson each added TD runs of 20 and one yard, respectively.

McCloskey finished the game going 13-19 for 230 yards, four TD's and one interception.

The Eagles defense just ran rampant over the Rhino offensive line, with 14 sacks more than disrupting their passing attack.

With no rushing game to speak of, the Lakes Area defensive line lived in the Rhino backfield.

Central Minnesota only had five completions for 100 yards in the game.

The white-hot Eagles will now host the Sting in the playoffs, which will be the third meeting between the two teams.

"We feel comfortable knowing what the Sting will do after seeing them twice already," McCloskey said. "They are a run-heavy team, since they lost their starting quarterback to injury.

"They also have two phenomenal linebackers who give us fits."

The two teams split the season series, with the Sting winning the second game of the season and the Eagles returning the favor June 12.

"Hopefully we can keep the ball rolling into the playoffs," McCloskey said.

The winner will move onto the NFPL championship game against Menomonie, Wis., July 24.

Saturday's playoff tilt starts at 5 p.m. and admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students K-12 and free for preschoolers.
