Early morning Grand Forks fire damages apartment
GRAND FORKS -- An early morning fire caused about $25,000 in property damage to an apartment at 8 1/2 South 3rd Street in downtown Grand Forks, according to the city Fire Department.
The fire damage was limited to the kitchen area and smoke damage throughout the second-story apartment, according to a Fire Department news release.
Firefighters reported light smoke and water were coming from the apartment when they arrived at 4:05 a.m. Police assisted with the evacuation of other residents.
The buildings sprinkler system extinguished the fire, which started in the kitchen area, the release said.
A single apartment occupant was found inside and brought out by fire crews. The resident, who was uninjured, was protected from the smoke by sleeping with the door closed to the bedroom. The person was evaluated by Altru ambulance personnel but was not taken to the hospital.
An investigation of the fire continues this morning.
