According to Police Sgt. Mike Anderson, the victim called in about 9:30 p.m. today and said he had stopped in to check on his mother's house while she is in the hospital.

"It was supposed to be vacant," Anderson said. "But he caught an intruder inside, there was some kind of struggle and the victim was cut with a knife."

The man was taken to Altru Hospital where he is expected to be treated and released, Anderson said.

The knife-wielder, who fled, was described as 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 8, in his mid-teens to early 20s, wearing a dark ski cap, dark jacket and blue jeans. He was described as white or possibly Hispanic, Anderson said.

It happened in the 700 block of First Avenue North East in East Grand Forks, in a residential area northwest of the American Crystal Sugar plant, and near Riverside Christian School, in the former Central junior high school building.

Anderson said no other similar crimes have been reported and it appears to be an isolated incident that does not put the public in grave danger. But the suspect still is on the loose and police are looking for any leads or other information to help them with the case, Anderson said.
