Auroura Eckberg, Detroit Lakes High School sophomore and daughter of Ron and Sarah Eckberg, will compete at the Department of Minnesota American Legion Oratorical Contest finals in Anoka on Feb. 21.
There she will go against the nine other district winners.
Eckberg’s 8-10 minute prepared presentation touches on most of the Bills of Rights of the U.S. Constitution.
Once Eckberg was declared the local winner on Dec. 16, Sharon Josephson began coaching her. Tom Frank, local American Legion Oratorical chair, thought that Eckberg would go against at least two other at the 9th District contest in Fergus Falls on Jan. 11, but those two students dropped out just three days before District.
“This is a very difficult contest since the contestant must present the speech, after local level, sans notes,” Frank said. “What we’re most proud of is that Detroit Lakes has been represented at District at 35 of the past 37 contests. No other 9th District post comes close to this record.
“That also meant that many DLHS youth have studied extra about this magnificent document, the U.S. Constitution,” he added.
