Captain Edward R. "Ed" Berg, USAF Retired, 79, passed away Friday, March 18, 2011 at his home in Apache Junction, Ariz., surrounded by his wife and family.
Ed was born the son of Edward and Alice Berg on August 9, 1931 in St. Paul. After the death of his father, Ed's mother Alice married Luther Howard and the family moved to Aitkin, Minn.
Edward graduated from Aitkin High School in 1949. He then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving his country for 23 years until his retirement in 1970.
Ed married Mary Louise Kleiv in 1971. They built their home on Lake Ida, near Detroit Lakes. Ed provided a fishing guide service for Fair Hills Resort for 25 years. He loved golfing at the Wildflower Golf Course.
Ed enjoyed spending "time at the lake" with his family, who will always remember, with love, his voice bellowing out over the water, "Come in closer, you are too deep." Surviving Ed are Mary, his wife of 39½ years; his children, USAF retired Master Sgt. Garland (Beth), of Oregon, Edward (Corky), of Minnesota, Pamella (Rick) of North Dakota, Delane of Minnesota, USAF Master Sgt. Terry (Nicole) of California and Alice (Terry) of Perham; sister Audrey, of Minnesota; brother Michael (Margie) of Washington; sister-in-law Margaret, of Arizona; 23 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; four nieces; and two nephews.
Preceding Edward in death were his parents, Edward and Alice; great grandson, Luther; siblings, Richard, Lillian and Louise Berg of Stillwater, Minn.
A celebration of life service for Ed will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5 at Fair Hills Resort on Pelican Lake.
