Edwin T. Johnson, 90, Detroit Lakes, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, in Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes.
Edwin was born on Nov. 14, 1918, the son of T. Peter and Hilma (Johnson) Johnson in Cormorant Township, Becker County. He attended country school in District No. 27, Cormorant Township. As a young man, he worked on the family farm and later had many jobs, including the railroad, east of Dilworth. Edwin married Vivian Gilbertson in 1944. He later married Darlene (Malakowsky) Talbot in 1961. Edwin served in the U.S. Army, Mountain Division in Europe during World War II. Upon returning to Minnesota, he farmed and also worked for Armours Meat Packing Plant in Fargo, N.D. Edwin worked for Madison Silo Company for many years, he also drove truck, hauling turkeys for the Swift & Company and farmed. He later moved to Anacortes, Wash., where he did handyman jobs. Edwin was known for fixing and building things in unconventional ways, but could get almost anything to work. Edwin enjoyed music and played many instruments, all by ear. He enjoyed fishing, spending time with his family and friends, playing cards and eating out. Edwin loved and found joy in all young children, especially his grandchildren.
Edwin is survived by his sons, Edwin L. (Gladys) Johnson, Oak Harbor, Wash., Billy Jo Johnson, Faribault, Minn., George (Soo) Johnson, Martinsburg, W.V., Ronnie (Deborah) Johnson, Blaine, Wash.; daughters, Linda (Dennis) Dovre, Detroit Lakes, Shirley (Richard) Irons, Clear Lake, Wash., Diane Johnson, Waubun, Debra (Jack) Burnham, Shelton, Wash., Shelia (Steve) Hallenbeck, Anacortes, Wash., Twanda (Herb) Talbot Schultz, Oak Harbor, Wash., Cindy (Brent) Talbot Eliker, Bluffton, Minn., Debbie (Steve) Talbot Tovson, Audubon; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Emil (Inga) Johnson, Fargo, Alfred Johnson, Callaway, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Oscar T. and Johnny T. Johnson; sisters, Ellen, Adeline and June Johnson, Esther Carlson, Annie Lunstrom and Ida Gaard; sisters-in-law, Anna and Edna Johnson; brothers-in-law, David Lunstrom, Joe Gaard and Clarence Carlson.
A memorial service is Saturday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. in West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes.
