EGF starts fast and ends strong vs. Lakers
The quick-start East Grand Forks girls' hockey team pounced early and often on the Detroit Lakes Lakers, notching three goals in the first 10 minutes en route to a 9-1 victory Tuesday inside Kent Freeman Arena.
Although the Lakers were able to score in the first period on an Emily Payne tally, with Alexis Fritz assisting, they were not able to maintain the two-goal deficit as the Green Wave added three more goals in both the second and third periods.
"You have to credit East Grand Forks, they are a fast starting team and it took us a little bit to get in that physical style of play," said DL head coach Gretchen Norby. "I did see some good scoring opportunities for us, but I also saw several breakdowns."
EGF outshot the Lakers by a hefty 41-6 margin, as Norby sent out both her goalies in Veronica Badurek and Haileigh Wenger.
The Green Wave were led in scoring by forward Riley Koberlaski with two goals and two assists, while Coco Piche added a pair of tallies and three assists.
The Lakers have started out struggling with an 0-4 record. The young and inexperienced lines are showing against some of the top competition in the area.
"We need to find someone to put the puck in the net and start from there," Norby said. "We are not going to win games 5-4 or 6-5, but instead 2-1 or 2-0. We have struggled offensively and are now looking for someone to step up."
The lines are still a work in progress, as Norby will have fluid lineups each week to find the right matches.
Defensively, Norby feels that part of the game is coming along well.
"Our defensive core is playing well and improving," she said. "I've been impressed with Jamie Bollig, who has earned her time on the ice."
DL fell to River Lakes last Friday 4-2. The first Laker goal was tallied by Hailey Sonstegard on a power play series, with Callie Johnson and Emily Seebold assisting.
Goal two went to Randa Larsen on another power play effort.
The Lakers will be in the Fergus Falls Holiday Tournament, starting Friday and running through Saturday.
They will be in action back at home Tuesday, when they host Park Rapids for a Mid-State Conference game, starting at 7:30 p.m.
