Eldon Mastin

Eldon E. Mastin, 75, of Babbitt, Minn., passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes.

Eldon Earl Mastin was born to John and Mable (Hedley) Mastin on Feb. 26, 1933 in Fullerton, Neb. At two years of age, he moved with his family to North Dakota for a short time, and then moved to Becker County in Minnesota. He attended schools around the Ogema area. In 1951, he married the love of his life, Florence Schmoll. They farmed in Westbury and in Lake Park.

Eldon worked for a seismograph crew of Carter Oil Company before his employment with Reserve Mining Company in Babbitt from 1956-81, retiring with a disability. Eldon also was a part-time logger for 26 years before retiring.

Eldon was a very social, thoughtful and giving person. He loved being with friends, reminiscing, telling jokes and making people smile. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. He also enjoyed his garden, playing golf, and loved music and dancing. His greatest love in life was his family. He was always so proud of his children and his grandchildren. He was a loving husband and father and will be tremendously missed by all that knew him.

Surviving Eldon are his three daughters, Louise (Pete) Wilhelm of Virginia, Pam (Kendall) Hartline of Eveleth, Minn., and Connie (Mark) Freeman of Minneapolis; one son, Lenis (Susan) Mastin of Eveleth; four brothers, Harold (Alvera) Mastin of Embarrass, Minn., James Dornecker of Arkansas, Dale (Joann) Mastin of Osage and Donnie (JoAnn) Mastin of Osage; two sisters, Mary (Dave) Shaw of Duluth, Minn., and Marlys (Jerry) Oswald of Frazee; eight grandchildren; his stepmother, Agnes Mastin of Detroit Lakes; mother-in-law, Evelyn Schmoll of Detroit Lakes; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding Eldon in death were his parents; son Steven; sisters Evelyn, Cynthia and Bernice; and his father-in-law, Christian.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9 at Range Funeral Home in Virginia, continuing for one hour prior to Thursday's services at the church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Woodland Presbyterian Church in Babbitt, Minn.

Pallbearers will be Benjamin Wilhelm; Kaitlyn Wilhelm; Charles, Erin and Corey Hartline; and Andrew Freeman. Eldon will be buried in the Argo Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Range Funeral Home in Virginia.
