Election judge training is later this month
DETROIT LAKES - The November elections may seem to be far, far off, but for those looking to be certified as election judges, the time is now.
The Becker County Auditor-Treasurer's Office is offering evening training sessions on July 23, 24, 28 and 31, in Detroit Lakes, Lake Park and Wolf Lake. The sessions include not only the basic two-hour course, but also special training for head judges and clerks.
This training won't guarantee that you'll be an election judge come November, however -- just that you'll be certified as one, cautioned Ryan Tangen, Becker County Auditor-Treasurer.
"Election judges are appointed by the precinct -- whether it's for township, city, county, state or federal elections," Tangen explained.
The ballot for this November's general election is a particularly crowded one in Becker County: Three county commissioners, three Soil and Water Conservation District supervisors, two Supreme Court associate justices, six Court of Appeals judges, 14 Seventh Judicial District judges, one U.S. senator, one U.S. representative and three state representatives will all be elected.
And that's not even including all the city and school board offices that will be up for grabs. For the first time, six Becker County townships will hold their elections on Nov. 4 as well. It is the charge of the election judges in each precinct to determine whether each ballot cast is valid before tabulating them and submitting the results to Tangen's office.
The complete schedule of dates and locations for election judge training sessions is as follows:
Basic course: Wednesday, July 23, Lake Park City Center; Thursday, July 24, Wolf Lake City Center; Thursday, July 31, Becker County Courthouse, Detroit Lakes. All basic training sessions are two hours and will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Head judge training: Wednesday, July 23, Lake Park City Center; Thursday, July 24, Wolf Lake Community Center; Thursday, July 31, Becker County Courthouse, Detroit Lakes. All head judge training sessions are one hour and will take place from 8:30-9:30 p.m., following the basic course.
