Feb. 26, 1911-Oct. 21, 2011
Elizabeth "Betty" Ferris, 100, of Lake Bluff, Ill., passed away Friday, October 11, 2011.
Betty was born to John and Juliana Bakke on February 26, 1911 in Detroit Lakes. When she was a young girl, her father John was given the honor of naming a street in Detroit Lakes; the town's Elizabeth Street, which still exists today, was named after her. After graduating from high school, Betty taught community swimming lessons at the city beach.
Truly a woman ahead of her time, Betty graduated from the University of Minnesota, where she earned her teaching degree. Following graduation she took her first job with Cornell College. She then moved to the Chicago area to teach at Lake Forest College. She finished her teaching career in the Lake Bluff School System.
In the 1950s, she taught young women the sport of soccer to prepare them for later participation in high school field hockey. Betty served on the Lake Bluff Park Board during this time, organizing the summer activities for the community youth. She retired in the mid 1970s.
Betty enjoyed traveling with the Elderhostel program both in the United States and abroad, and loved sharing the stories of her adventures with family and friends. Staying active was a huge part of Betty's life and she played golf, exercised and swam in the pool until the age of 96. She also enjoyed other pursuits including gardening, listening to music, attending events at Ravinia and reading.
Betty loved spending time with her family and grandchildren and visits with friends, often sharing her love of chocolate and lemon drops. She participated in the right to vote as long as she was able to do so.
Betty was a longtime resident of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff, Ill., since she married in 1939. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church for over 55 years.
Betty was the mother of Julie A. Bryant of Mundelein and Leslie Lynn (Dennis) Twitty of East Galesburg, Ill.; grandmother of Lori (Andy) Reynolds, Katie (Steve) Pliszka, Jonathan (Moira) Twitty, Elissa Belle (Josh O'Keeffe) Twitty and Stephanie Lynne Twitty; great grandmother of Reid, Reilly and Avery Reynolds, Grace Elizabeth Twitty, and Aidan O'Keeffe.
Preceding her in death were her husband Leslie Ferris (1982) and a daughter, Claire Elizabeth Ferris (1947).
In lieu of flowers or plants, contributions can be made to the Lake Bluff Library or Grace United Methodist Church.
On Saturday, Nov. 12, a memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church in Lake Bluff. Those who want to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the church at 10 a.m. to proceed to the Lake Forest Cemetery. The memorial service will follow immediately after, back at the church.
