Elizabeth A. Schmit, 41, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at her residence.

Elizabeth Thomas was born to James and Susie (Hanson) Thomas on Jan. 23, 1968 in Detroit Lakes, where she grew up and attended Holy Rosary School. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1986. On Aug. 24, 1991 she married Steven Harstad in Detroit Lakes, where they made their home.

Liz received her R.N. Degree and worked for St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes, and most recently for the Frazee schools. On June 20, 1997 she married Tim Schmit. Liz was a very caring person. Family was very important to her and her children were the center of her life. She enjoyed the annual girls' weekend, with her sisters and her mom. She also liked animals, scrapbooking and making jewelry.

Surviving Liz are her daughter, Chloe Schmit; two sons, Christian and Casey Schmit; one stepson, Christopher Harstad of Osage; parents, Jim and Susie Thomas of Detroit Lakes; three sisters, Teresa (Drew) Brooks of Austin, Texas, Jane (Patrick) Thielen of Lino Lakes, Minn., and Rebecca (Jerry) Bentley of Detroit Lakes; two brothers, Paul (Diane) Thomas of Burnsville, Minn., and Sam (Lani) Thomas of Detroit Lakes; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Preceding her in death were her first husband, Steven Harstad; paternal grandparents; I.M. and Corrine Thomas; maternal grandparents, Bill and Gertrude Hanson; and a nephew, Bryan Thomas.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Sunday), with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, May 18 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
