Elmer was born to Fred and Pauline (Wallman) Barwin on May 14, 1928 in Ortonville, Minn., where he grew up and attended school. After graduating from high school there in 1947, Elmer enlisted in the National Guard and was activated in January of 1951. He served until November of 1952, when he moved back to Ortonville and later to Morris, Minn.

On Sept. 6, 1953, Elmer married Harriet Halvorson at Cormorant Lutheran Church in rural Lake Park. Together they lived in Morris before making their home in Cottage Grove, Minn., and starting a family. Elmer and Harriet lived in Cottage Grove for 25 years before moving to Lake Ida, rural Lake Park, in 1985. Elmer worked at various supermarkets throughout his career and retired in 1991, after 42 years as a meat cutter.

Elmer was a proud father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by his children, Bruce (Dawne) Barwin of Thompson, N.D., Cynthia Barwin of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Karl Barwin of Mora, Minn.; two grandsons; and brother, Boyd Barwin of Groton, S.D.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Harriet; parents, Fred and Pauline; and brothers, Robert and George.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Cormorant Lutheran Church in rural Lake Park. There will be a memorial gathering for one hour prior to the start of services at the church.

Interment will take place in Cormorant Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lake Park. Arrangements have been entrusted to Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead. An online guestbook is available at www.wrightfuneral.com.
