Dec. 21, 1924-Dec. 31, 2010
Elton Theron Moe, 86, of Cottlesloe, Australia, died Friday, December, 31, 2010.
Elton was born to Thea (Elton) and Ole Moe on December 21, 1924, on the family farm in Hamden Township. He attended District 34 rural school and then Audubon High School, graduating in 1943.
After graduation Elton entered the United States Navy, serving almost 30 years. One of the most exciting things he did while serving on the U.S.S. Hornet was to help retrieve the astronauts from the Apollo 11 mission.
While he was stationed in Rome, Italy in 1961, Elton met and married Helen Constance Macartney, from Perth, Australia. In the early 1970s he retired from the Navy and retrained as a teacher, making his home in Seattle, Washington.
In the mid to late 1970s Elton took a job with the U.S. Postal Service, spending the next 20 years working for them. In the late 1990s he retired and decided to spend his remaining years in Australia, with three of his four children and his grandchildren.
Elton was an avid reader, particularly of military history, had a great sense of humor and loved his children and grandchildren.
Surviving Elton are his daughter, Jackie (Scott) Robinson of South Fremantle, Australia; sons Jamie (Olivia) Moe of Perth, Australia, Matthew Moe of Seattle, Wash., and William (Lisa) Moe, also of Perth; as well as nine grandchildren.
Preceding Elton in death were his first wife Helen (1980); second wife Lavinia of Seattle; parents Thea and Ole Moe of Audubon; as well as sisters Thelma Hemmer and Signe Hanson, both of Audubon, and Orlene Erdmann of Groton, S.D.
