Emma Alvina Miliander was born to Victor and Ida (Wahlin) Miliander on October 9, 1925 near Goodrich, Minn. Emma was raised and educated near Winger, Minn., where she attended a small country school. Following school she worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes as a nursing assistant.
On September 20, 1961 Emma was united in marriage to Quinten Hjelter in Detroit Lakes. Along with farming, Emma and Quinten also ran a dairy farm. Emma was instrumental in helping the farm succeed. From operating the machinery to milking the cows, there was not a chore to big or too small in her eyes. She also assisted Quinten as caretaker of Lakeside Cemetery for many years. They retired from farming in 1980.
Emma entered the Frazee Care Center in June of 2005. Quinten passed away in December of 2009. Apart from being an accomplished seamstress, Emma enjoyed the simple things in life. She loved sewing, making many outfits and costumes for her daughter Quenette through the years. Baking was also one of Emma's specialties; she was known for her desserts, cookies and cakes. She also enjoyed refinishing furniture. Most important to Emma was time spent with her family, especially her grandson Jason.
Emma will be remembered and missed by her daughter, Quenette (Kevin) Renollet of Frazee; grandson, Jason Renollet of Frazee; and sister, Edna (Martin) Larson of Alexandria, Minn.; along with many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Emma in death were her parents; husband Quinten (2009); brother, Vernon Miliander; and sisters, Irene Miliander, Idella Miliander and Mae Osmonson.
