Engelbert Humperdinck’s career began at age 17 when his friends convinced him to put down his saxophone and enter a singing competition at a local pub. His shaggy sideburns, flamboyant wardrobe and rich, silky voice, soon won over hearts across the United Kingdom.
After recovering from tuberculosis and looking to reinvent himself, Humperdinck, born Arnold George Dorsey, changed his name at the suggestion of his then manager Gordon Mills. The bold change worked, and, in 1966, he signed a new deal with Decca Classics.
In 1967, Humperdinck released a pop-ballad version of “Release Me,” formerly a country song by Ray Price and Esther Phillips, which skyrocketed him to the top of the UK charts.
Over his 40-year career, Humperdinck has sold more than 150 million records, garnered a Golden Globe for “Entertainer of the Year” (1988), received four Grammy nominations, released 63 gold and 24 platinum records, and has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
But what makes Humperdinck truly unique is his versatility. Although he is most widely known for his romantic ballads such as, “After the Lovin’,” “When There’s No You,” and “Am I That Easy To Forget,” Humperdinck has recorded everything from dance music, remixing some of his most popular songs, such as “Quando, Quando, Quando,” and “Release Me,” to Platinum-selling theme songs, such as “Lesbian Seagull.”
On March 17, Humperdinck released his most recent album, “Engelbert Calling.” The album, which is his first duet CD, allowed him to collaborate with stars including Sir Elton John, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson and Olivia Newton-John.
Even with the recent excitement surrounding his new release, Humperdinck continues to go on tour and thrill his fans with his smooth sound and charming good looks.
With his extraordinary voice and legendary talent, Engelbert Humperdinck is one act you will not want to miss.
