The Park Rapids Area Community Band presents its 18th annual spring concert at 3 p.m. today (Sunday) in the Park Rapids Area High School auditorium. It is a free-will offering event.

The Detroit Lakes Laker Jazz Band performs at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 4 in the DL City Park bandshell. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the DL Middle School auditorium.

On Monday, May 4, Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre welcomes Big Top Chautauqua's "Old Minnesota: Song of the North Star" to the stage for a 7:30 p.m. show. This show was created specifically for the Minnesota Sesqui-centennial in 2008, and portrays in story, song and large-screen vintage visuals the lives, ambitions and accomplishments of Minnesota's Native inhabitants, European settlers and their descendants. The Mixed Blood Theatre of Minneapolis will present two performances of its new play about American Muslims, "Hijab Tub," one at the New York Mills Schools in the afternoon, and one evening show at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, on Monday, March 4, starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the evening performance is free to students, and $10 for adults. Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M-State)-Fergus Falls sophomore music student, Jim Stenger will present a music recital on Tuesday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Waage Theater. Susan Sanner is the accompanist. Jim is the son of Mark and Joan Stenger of Vergas, Minnesota and is a 2006 graduate of Perham High School. The public is invited to attend and admission is free. Big Top Chatauqua will make a stop in Fergus Falls on Wednesday, May 6 to present its environmental feature, "Minnesota Wild Woods & Waters," at 7 p.m. in the Historic Fergus Theatre, 124 W. Lincoln Ave. The Blue Canvas Orchestra takes you on an illuminated journey celebrating the wild side of our nation's waters and landscapes by song. Advance tickets for the show are $20 per family, $10 for adults and $5 for students. Day-of-show tickets are $25 per family, $12 for adults. On Friday, May 8, the Concordia Chamber Players will perform a chamber music concert featuring pieces for winds and piano at the Top Hat Theatre, Ulen-Hitterdal School, starting at 7:30 p.m. All members are faculty at Concordia College in Moorhead.  The concert will feature works by Minnesota composer, Libby Larsen as well as Eric Ewazen, Franz Liszt, and Concordia composer Russ Peterson.   Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students of all ages and may be purchased at the school office or reserved at 218-596-8853. This concert date was moved to May 8th due to flood schedule changes.

The North Dakota State University Opera Theatre and Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M-State) Music Department are proud to present Benjamin Britten's "Albert Herring," a comic opera about the loss of innocence, on Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Waage Theatre on the M-State Fergus Falls campus.

First Lutheran Church will present its annual Mothers, Daughters & Friends Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9 at the church, 912 Lake Ave.. Local musician Rick Kratzke "and friends" will provide the entertainment, an original combination of music, comedy and drama created by Kratzke especially for the event. Tickets, which are $3 for children age 7 and under, $6 for all others, must be reserved by Monday, May 4. The Lodge on Lake Detroit continues its "Live at the Lodge" series on Saturday, May 9, with a concert featuring Minneapolis vocalist Christine Rosholt, accompanied by musicians Graydon Peterson on bass and Vincent Rose on guitar and piano. The Detroit Lakes community's newly-renamed Parkfest celebration takes place from 1 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12 in the Detroit Lakes City Park. There will be "yard games" for children, including a sand castle building contest and face painting; the second annual "Mosaic Mania" silent auction; a high school baseball game at Washington Ball Park (across the street from the city park); music and plays presented by local students; booths sponsored by local businesses, and more. A free community picnic starts at 5 p.m., featuring hot dogs, chips and beverages. The event will conclude with an evening concert by a capella group InPulse. In the event of inclement weather, all events will be held in the DL Pavilion.

The "Random & Esoteric" art show by Detroit Lakes artist David Norstad will be held over at the Beck Gallery on Minnesota State Community and Technical College's Fergus Falls campus through Tuesday, May 12. The show consists of paintings, collages, and mixed media work. In addition to the art, viewers will enjoy the whimsical humor of the titles the artist has provided. Donna Chalimonczyk, a watermedia artist from Moorhead, will be exhibiting her work at the Detroit Lakes Library during the month of May. Her paintings include a wide variety of subjects including landscapes, still life, people and abstracts. Donna began painting in 1990 when she joined the Cormorant Area Art Club and was living near Lake Park. She continues her membership in the CAAC, where she attends workshops and displays her work during their July art show. She is also a member of the Red River Watercolor Society, F-M Visual Artists and the Hjemkomst Center Artists' Studio in Moorhead.

The Vietnam Traveling Wall is coming to the Chas. D. Center Post 3289 in New York Mills from June 3-8. Local VFWs are accepting donations for this event to happen.
