Errors cuff DL in 11-6 loss

Hitting? Check. Pitching? Check. Defense? Ummmm....not quite.

The Detroit Lakes softball team did well in two of their three facets of the game, but defense sunk them in their season opener in Bemidji with an 11-6 loss.

The Lakers committed 13 errors, leading to eight unearned runs, as DL even outhit the Lumberjacks by a 10-9 margin.

"The girls hit the ball well and pitched well, but the 13 errors was the game right there," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "I expected a few errors in the first game of the season, but not 13."

Senior pitcher Callea Butz gave up just three hits, but lasted only three innings after DL had five errors in that time span.

"Callea was keeping the ball down in the first two innings, but in the third there were two unearned runs," Kirchner said. "I'm sure she got a little frustrated. But the defense will be something we will work on and stress in practice.

"They will learn how to take care of the ball."

Cady Cartmell came in for relief and pitched the final three innings, giving up six hits, but only one earned run.

The Lakers had four players record two hits, including Donna Wicker, Brianna Seebold, Steph Ianiro and Jenna Lamb.

A three-run sixth inning was highlighted by an RBI double by Seebold, but the Lumberjacks preceded the Lakers with a five-run fifth to pull out comfortable 11-3.

Amanda Young added two RBIs on her two-run double in the fifth.

"They were hitting the ball well against a pretty good pitcher, but we need to take care of the defense and we'll be alright," Kirchner said.

The Lakers will travel to Thief River Falls Friday for a 4:30 p.m. start.
