The good news for the Detroit Lakes softball team was that the Lakers gave up just one earned run against Park Rapids during its second round Section 8-2A playoff game.

The bad news, the No. 4 Panthers added 11 unearned runs off of six DL errors to down the No. 6 Lakers 12-7.

The season came to a grinding halt in game two Thursday in Thief River Falls, as Warroad blanked DL 12-0 in five innings to eliminate the Lakers from playoff contention.

But in the end, it was DL's generosity in the field which was the sticking point for Laker head coach Phil Kirchner.

"We swung the bat well and we had some good pitching, but when you have that many errors in the playoffs, that's what happens," Kirchner said. "We just gave Park Rapids too many chances."

DL had three consecutive errors in the second inning, which led to three Panthers runs to tie the game at 3-3.

It was back and forth from there, as the Lakers added a run in the third on a Brianna Seebold RBI fielder's choice to score Shayna Dugger, who singled.

But the Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-4 lead on a two-run single by Morgan Kelly.

The pendulum swung back to the Lakers with a three-run fourth, which was keyed by back-to-back RBI singles by Dugger and Sarah Wilson for the 7-5 advantage.

The clincher for Park Rapids came in the sixth as the Panthers put together a four-run frame behind two hits and two errors.

"We were carrying some momentum after taking a three run lead in the second inning (which included a two-run triple by Amalea Branden), but we had a couple of errors and gave up three unearned runs to let Park Rapids back in it," Kirchner said.

Branden led the way for the Lakers with a 2-2 day, along with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wilson added two hits, as well.

Park Rapids No. 9 hitter Alyssa Carlson anchored the Panther's hitting attack, going 3-3 and two RBIs.

Callea Butz took the loss for DL after pitching well, giving up 12 hits, but only one earned run.

Cady Clinton pitched for the victory with no walks, three strikeouts and allowing seven hits.

In the elimination game, Warroad pummeled DL for 11 runs and the 11-0 win.

Seebold broke up Warroad's Meghan Merriman's no-hit bid with a DL's only hit, which was a single in the fifth inning.

Cady Cartmell was tagged with the loss.

"There just was no gas left in the tank," Kirchner said of the Warroad loss.
