Errors hinder Lakers

Defense -- or a lack thereof -- was the Detroit Lakes softball team's hiccup in the Lakers' three-game stretch Friday and Saturday.

Even in DL's victory, errors were prevalent as the team went 1-2, with a loss Friday to Thief River Falls and against Moorhead in the Laker Softball Tournament Saturday at Snappy Park.

DL did salvage a victory over West Fargo's junior varsity team in the opening round of the tournament, by the score of 6-5.

Over the three games, DL had a combined 14 errors.

"If you can't play defense, you don't give the team a chance to win the game," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "We just kind of fell apart against Moorhead (with seven errors) and missed several fly balls.

"But that happens with a young team, it's part of the maturation process. They'll overcome it."

It seemed the errors came in bunches, which led to big innings by DL opponents.

Friday against Thief River Falls, the Prowlers took advantage of three miscues in the fourth inning to key a seven-run frame and open up a 5-0 advantage to a 12-run margin.

DL couldn't answer the Prowlers' 15 hits, managing only four in the 12-1 loss.

Junior Callea Butz was tagged with her first loss, allowing five earned runs and striking out six.

Hailey Peterson and Laurel Britten each went 3-4 with a double for the visiting TRF squad.

Butz was on target against West Fargo, tossing 11 strikeouts and only one walk in a close 6-5 win over the Packers.

The Lakers started off early, building a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Back-to-back one-out singles by Sarah Wilson and Brianna Seebold loaded the bases for DL, setting the table up for the bottom of the order.

Kortney Goettel, Ashley Baer and Amalea Branden each delivered RBI at-bats consecutively, for the 3-0 advantage in the first inning.

They followed that up with leadoff singles by Kasey Smith and Donna Wicker in the second, with Seebold and Goettel each gaining RBIs.

Errors in each of the third and fourth innings helped cut the lead in half to 6-3, with West Fargo mounting a potential game-tying rally in the top of seventh.

After allowing a double and single to start the seventh, Butz clamped down to register three outs in the next four at-bats and give DL the 6-5 win.

"Callea threw strikes, but we had some errors in the game to allow West Fargo to get back into it," Kirchner said.

DL finished with four errors in the tilt, while Butz picked up her third win of the season.

Baer, Wicker and Seebold each went 2-3 to key DL's nine hits.

The Spuds handed the Lakers a lopsided 19-1 loss, which included seven errors.

Cady Cartmell took the loss on the mound after allowing six earned runs out of the 19 and nine Moorhead hits.

"Cady pitched decent, but you can't survive by having to have to pitch to 10 extra batters (because of errors)," Kirchner said.

The Lakers (3-2) will host Crookston Friday at Snappy Park, starting at 4:30 p.m.
