Ethel C. Nelson, 73, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, October 27, 2011 at her home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Ethel was born the daughter of Wilfred and Dorothy (Schott) Sarvie on August 12, 1938 in Grand Park Township of rural Becker County, at the CCC Camp. She was raised on the family farm in rural Ponsford and attended school in Frazee, graduating in 1957. As a young woman, she worked at the Graystone Hotel.
Ethel was united in marriage to Paul Nelson on October 31, 1959 at Zion Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Shortly after their marriage she began her career at Norby's Department Store and retired in 1991, as office manager, after 29 years. She then went to work for the Detroit Lakes Street and Park Department for a few years.
Ethel enjoyed traveling, deer hunting, fishing, golf, bowling and watching country singers perform over the years at WE Fest.
Surviving Ethel are her husband, Paul Nelson of Detroit Lakes; son, Russ (Lori) Nelson of Detroit Lakes; two brothers, Donald (Charlotte) Sarvie of Okoboji, Iowa, and Edwin Sarvie of Alexandria, Minn.; one sister, Mildred (Arnold) Blauert of Frazee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Ethel in death were her parents and one brother, Harold Sarvie.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes.
Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Zion Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with interment in Holmesville Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes.
