As a young man, Gene ventured to Cog-swell, North Dakota, where he worked on a farm for several years. At the age of 18, Gene enlisted in the United States Army where he faithfully served his country in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1954. While being caught in a snowstorm when traveling through Menahga, MN, shortly after his discharge from the Army, Gene met a cute waitress by the name of Elaine Ardith Jessen. The young couple fell in love and were married on April 2, 1955. This union was blessed with nine children: Stanley, Larry, Darrell, Thomas, Timothy who died in in-fancy, Julie, Terry, Carmen and Brenda.

Gene moved with his family to the Detroit Lakes area where they engaged in farming, raising up a fine herd of beef cattle and growing the crops needed to feed his herd. He also worked for the City of Detroit Lakes in the street department. In 1994, Gene retired and a short time later they moved to Park Rapids where they en-joyed their retirement years together.

In 2009, Gene's failing health caused them to return to Detroit Lakes to be closer to family. Throughout his life, Gene enjoyed the out of doors. He loved camping and canoeing with his family.
