Eugene O. "Gene" Torgusson, 83, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, July 14, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.

Gene was born to Victor and Agnes (Braaten) Torgusson on Aug. 15, 1924 in Fergus Falls, where he was raised and educated until moving to the Richville area. Gene attended Perham High School. He was drafted on July 28, 1943 by the United States Army. Gene served in the Philippines and New Guinea. He received an honorable discharge on Feb. 23, 1946.

Gene married the love of his life, Charlotte Shasky, on June 26, 1947 in Ottertail. They made their home in Fergus Falls for a short time before moving to Detroit Lakes. Gene worked as a salesman at A&B Supply, which later became Hedahls Auto Parts, until his retirement in 1994.

After his retirement, Gene and Charlotte would spend the winters in Arizona and Texas. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and working on antique furniture. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, and will be dearly missed by all.

Surviving Gene are his wife, Charlotte; daughter, Pat (Hank) Weimer-Carpenter of Detroit Lakes; son, Brian (Sandy) Torgusson of Detroit Lakes; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sister, Marian (Duane) Donley of Richville; three brothers, Donald (Betty) Torgerson of Richville, Larry (Sandy) Torgerson and Jim Torgerson, both of Ottertail; two brothers-in-law, Robert (Marlene) Shasky of Frazee and James (Sylvia) Shasky of Moorhead; sister-in-law, Letty Shasky of Ottertail; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Gene in death were his parents; his brother-in-law, Floyd Shasky; as well as a niece and nephew.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the service. West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, is handling arrangements.
