This program on "Alternative Breeding and Gestation Management" will be held April 27-28 at the U of M's West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris.
The course will address rearing replacement females, breeding systems and mating options, managing pregnancy, preparing for parturition, and sow health challenges and management.
Experiences and applications with alternative systems, such as outdoor hoops, will be highlighted. Registration is due April 20.
Classroom instruction is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. the first day, with a hands-on instructional period in swine research facilities the second day from 8 a.m. to noon.
Course instructors are from the University of Minnesota and private industry, making the workshop relevant for experienced pork producers seeking refresher information and updates on recent developments, and also for those who have limited pork production knowledge.
Cost is $100 per person and includes learning materials, meals, breaks, instructor fees and bio-security clothing for hands-on training sessions. Additional participants from the same production system or farm may register for $50 each.
