Family bash a hit for 10 years
The lakes area is not only busy during the summer, there are also opportunities to celebrate New Year's Eve without having to travel much.
Every year, the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center holds a New Year's Eve bash for families who are looking to have a good, substance-free time.
The 10th annual event will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, and last until 10 p.m.
"It's been something that we can do for the community. It's a great way for a family to be able to celebrate the new year together," said Kim Bettcher, one of the organizers and the center's aquatics director.
The evening will offer different games and activities including the popular giant inflatable slide that will be placed in the gym.
A climbing wall and a waterslide will also give kids the variety they're looking for. There will be kid-friendly bingo and door prizes as well.
Another popular activity that the community center has been holding every year is the cannonball contest at the pool.
To cap off the evening, Bettcher said the organizers are planning a balloon drop and countdown at the end of the night.
Festive and kid-friendly food such as hotdogs and chips will be served to those who decide to attend.
Admission for the New Year's Eve bash is $5 a person or $20 a family.
"There is a lot of variety in the community and this is one more option for friends and families or those from out of town to experience the community center during a different time of day," Bettcher said.
Other New Year's Eve events happening in Detroit Lakes include a live band performance and DJ service at the Speak Easy beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.
Zorbaz will also have DJ and karaoke at 9 p.m. Friday with a live band performance on New Year's Day.
The Lodge on Lake Detroit will have two Live at the Lodge concerts on Friday and Saturday, and the Eagles Club will also have live music and dancing on New Year's Eve from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. (see entertainment calendar for details).
